A Garden Tour of Our Front Perennial Garden (May 31 2024) / What We Planted / Plant Info
We moved into our new house in November of 2023 and this is our first growing season here. This tour is a progress update on what I've planted so far and why. I started with some of my favorite perennials like Russian sage, coreopsis, and salvia and added more plants! One of my main goals is to fill up the area with plants to reduce the amount of mulch needed to maintain it.

Sage Advice for Success with Growing Russian Sage in the Garden
Переглядів 2,3 тис.Місяць тому
Russian sage is a beautiful perennial plant for the garden. It's fairly easy to grow too if you follow a few simple tips on growing it. It can be good if you need a deer resistant plant and is also amazing in full sun locations that get hot and dry. Russian sage has two botanical names. It was Perovskia atriplicifolia for many years but recently was renamed as Salvia yangii. It grows well in zo...
Tips for Growing Lemon Balm and Mint (Care and Propagation)
Переглядів 2,2 тис.Місяць тому
Lemon balm and mint are great plants to grow in the garden. They can both be very useful herbs but gardeners do need to be careful on how they plant these two plants in the garden. Propagation of these two herbs is also very simple. They can be propagated through cuttings or division. Cuttings will root well in water or in a rooting medium/potting soil. The most important thing to keep in mind ...

Why I am Tilling Our New Vegetable Garden / Till Now, No Till Later!
Переглядів 7402 місяці тому
I've always been a fan of raised bed gardening so it may seem out of character for me to talk about tilling a garden. However there can be some good reasons for beginning with tilling a garden. In our case this year we are starting with a completely blank slate for a garden. If anything was ever grown on this property it has been an extremely long time. By tilling our first garden area we are a...
Leaf Spots on Irises, What is it? What to Do!
Переглядів 8132 місяці тому
If you see leaf spots on your iris plants this time of year it could be a fungus! Leaf spot disease is a very common problem for iris, narcissus, daylily, and gladiolus. These oval shaped spots begin to appear and gradually turn the leaves brown. This problem can be managed by creating better airflow to allow the plants to dry out, removing the leaves, disposing of the leaves properly (don't co...
One Final Tour of Our Old Garden
Переглядів 8002 місяці тому
It's time for one last garden tour of our old garden. After 17 years our old home will become someone else's new home and they will inherit this garden. It's bittersweet. I'm really looking forward to the new projects we'll be able to do at our new home, but we've lived a lot of life at the old house. We took a blank slate foreclosure home and made it our own. We grew a little bit of everything...
How to Plant Foundation Trees and Shrubs near a House

Foundation plantings help to soften the exterior of a home and make it blend in better with the landscape. Houses just look a whole lot better when you include plants! It will also stay away from the windows on the house and soft...
How to Transplant Peppers into Bigger Pots
Переглядів 7823 місяці тому
Transplanting pepper plants into larger pots is an extremely easy but necessary part of growing your pepper plants from seed. Because of this you won't be able to keep them in their original seed starting container and you will need to transplant your pepper p...
Why I Picked 'Blue Arrow' Junipers for Our Front Garden (Juniperus scopulorum)

For our front garden I wanted a couple tall evergreen plantings that fit in a very tight space between our front garage windows. I needed an evergreen that I wouldn't have to worry about it getting too tall and needing pruning. 'Blue Arrow' Juniper fit the needs for our front garden area. This Western redcedar cultivar grows from 12 to 15 ft tall but stays a compact 2 ft in diameter! (I have se...
Setting Up a New Vego Garden Raised Bed!

    So i have some salvia (perfect profusion) that is all bloomed out and turned brown. I was about to cut off the spent blooms when I noticed what seems like the spent blooms themselves are blooming again. Am i mistaking soon to be new blooms for spent blooms? or do they rebloom without being pruned?

    • @Growingthehomegarden
      @Growingthehomegarden Годину тому

      They can rebloom without pruning but they tend to be shorter than the first set of stalks. You can get better blooms by pruning out the old ones and encouraging new branches to grow.

    Just found this video(4 years later). How large did you let the sage get before actually planting it where you wanted? Did your sage take off after planting? I planted some last year and they died. Would you suggest mixing some sand into the ground where they are planted? I have some little ones and am hoping they will grow. Thanks

    • @Growingthehomegarden
      @Growingthehomegarden День тому

      I would recommend getting it to the point when it has 3 to 4 good little stems before planting it in the garden. My trouble with Russian sage has been too much shade. We've moved now so we have a lot better situation for sun loving plants like Russian sage. I wouldn't mix sand as sand + clay makes a brick. But I don't know your soil situation. I would add drainage with fine pine bark shavings (soil conditioner). The key with Russian sage is light, heat, and dryness. Too much moisture is bad so adding drainage to the soil helps immensely! I did a recent video on planting it at our new home: ua-cam.com/video/5n_VUvDBf18/v-deo.html

    • @Growingthehomegarden
      @Growingthehomegarden 6 днів тому

      I will normally use play sand, builders sand, or paver sand. It's an inert material that doesn't harbor diseases. You can use other combinations that should work too. Perlite/peat or vermiculite/peat are often used. Even fine bark shavings works. The idea is to minimize the opportunity for pathogens to hurt the cuttings.

    Great video and thanks for the information. One question though? Should the cuttings be placed in full sun or in the shade, while waiting for them to take root? Thanks, in advance.

    • @Growingthehomegarden
      @Growingthehomegarden 6 днів тому

      Shade definitely. The cuttings will dry out way to fast otherwise. A little dappled sun would be fine but not full sun. I would do most of my cuttings under the shade of a Japanese maple. That worked really well.

    I planted 5 buckeye seeds and only one sprouted. I put it in an individual pot until it was about 4 inches tall. Transplanted it in the ground and now the leaves are turning copper color and falling off. The tiny stems are still green, but worried it's dying. We've had a lot of rain lately and I'm wondering if that's the reason. I'm in WI - any suggestions?

    • @Growingthehomegarden
      @Growingthehomegarden 8 днів тому

      How much sun does it get? They generally prefer a dappled light situation which could lead to the branches/leaves turning color and falling off.

    I love this. I just started learning about gardening and it amazes me to see my plants growing. I spent a fortune on my backyard and plan to attack the front yard next year. In the meantime, I’ve started propagating the Danica arborvitaes that I have in my backyard. It’s so exciting!

      I think I answered that in the comments of that video. I had a rodent invasion and they ate the seeds before the winter was over. Unfortunately they didn't sprout but not because of the method. Once we are finally settled I hope to do that again. I need some more Japanese maples at the new place!

    I agree 200% . That’s a pet peeve of mine. I see homes with foundation plantings way too close!😱 I like about 2 feet from it and plant for the mature size diameter. I worked at a garden centre and would always explain that in addition to the overhang, you still need air flow, and to be able to maintain your house i.e. clean windows, using ladders, xmas lights, pruning shrubs etc… .

    I have actually experimented with lemon balm and it does repel mosquitoes. I soaked a ton of leaves in a light cooking oil in a mason jar and stuck it in a sunny window for about a week. You can change out with fresh lemon balm until the oil has a lemony scent. I rubbed some on one leg and sure enough, the mosquitoes only went for the untreated leg. 👍🏻

    Don’t even get me started on “patents “ for God’s gifts from nature. My understanding is propagating plants (patented or not) for personal use and not for resale, is fine. They just don’t want you making money off “their invention” greedy folks that they are. If they want to come after me for propagating my own, they’ll have to catch me first 😉. 😂

    What kind of soil do you recommend for propogating? Does it vary by plant type or is there a "one size fits all"?

    • @Growingthehomegarden
      @Growingthehomegarden 16 днів тому

      It's a little bit of an "it depends" type answer. For very easy stuff like Thyme you can simply plant them in regular potting soil. They root well or may already have roots. More difficult plants may need a sterile planting medium in which case the easiest to use I find is sand. Some people will use peat/perlite/vermiculite. One combo I like is peat in the lower half of a container then sand on top. There isn't a truly one size fits all situation but in general sand works well for me so that's what I generally recommend.
